Poland is a country located in Central Europe, and is the fifth most populated country in the European Union with a population of 38 million. The country is bordered by Russia, Lithuania, Belarus, Ukraine, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany. The total area Poland covers is 312,696 square kilometers, or 120,733 square miles. The largest city and capital is Warsaw. Other large cities include Kraków, Łódź, Wrocław, Poznań, and Gdańsk. The government of Poland is a unitary parliamentary republic, as well as a representative democracy. The current president is Andrzej Duda, while the current prime minister is Mateusz Morawiecki.

Geographically, Poland is divided with two major mountain ranges, with the Sudetes in the west and the Carpathians in the east. The highest point within Poland is located on the Tatra Mountains, which are located in the south. Mount Rysy extends at an altitude of 2,501 meters or 8,205 feet. The longest rivers in Poland are the Vistula, the Oder, the Warta, and the Bug. Poland is also home to around 10,000 lakes, making the country home to one of the highest density of lakes in the world. The largest lakes are Śniardwy and Mamry, while the deepest is Lake Hańca.

There are over 400 species of vertebrae, which includes several species of mammals and more than 200 birds native to the country. Deer, elk, and wild pigs are commonly found animals in forests. Wildcats, chamois, and marmots typically reside within mountains. Forests occupy 31% of Poland’s land area. The most common deciduous trees found are oak, maple, and beech, while common conifers are pine, spruce, and fir. 69% of all forests in Poland are made up of coniferous trees. There are around 315,100 hectares, or 1,217 square miles, of land made up of protected land in National Parks.

The economy of Poland is the sixth largest economy within the European Union, and is the fifth largest by PPP. 61% of the workforce is employed in the industry sector, 31% employed in manufacturing, and 8% remains within the agricultural sector. The country is home to the largest banking sector within the European Union, with 32.3 branches per 100,000 people, and was also the only country in the European Union to avoid the recession of 2008. Tourism helps play a key role in the country’s economy, with nearly 21 million tourists arriving in 2019.

Because Poland is such a developed country, the population is relatively older, as the median age is 42 years old. The total fertility rate of the country is amongst the lowest in the world as well, coming in at 1.42 children per woman. 60% of Poland’s total population lives in major urban centers. Over the past few years, the amount of migrant workers has increased within Poland. In fact, in just 2021 alone, the country approved 504,172 work permits for migrants. In 2017, it was measured that more than 1.7 million Ukrainian citizens worked within Poland.
