The Czech Republic is a landlocked country located in Central Europe. It is bordered by Germany, Austria, Poland, and Slovakia. In 2016, the country adopted the name “Czechia”, as a more casual way of saying Czech Republic. The total population is 10,516,707 inhabitants, with the largest city being Prague, which just so happens to also be the capital. Other major cities in the Czech Republic include Brno, Ostrava, Plzeň, and Liberec.

Covering an area of 78,871 square kilometers (that’s 30,452 square miles), the landscape of the Czech Republic consists of mountain ranges, tall and low. The highest point in the Czech Republic is Sněžka standing at 1,603 meters (or 5,259 feet), which is located within the Krkonoše range of mountains. Within the Czech Republic are four different national parks. Water from the Czech Republic is able to flow into the North Sea, Baltic Sea, and Black Sea. The climate of the Czech Republic is known to be very mixed, with warm summers and very cold and snowy winters. This is because of its landlocked position as a country. Within the Czech Republic, there are no regional climate zones that are able to be picked out, as the climate follows the topography within the country. The highest point of Sněžka experiences an average temperature of –0.4°C (that’s 31°F), while the capital city of Prague experiences an average temperature of 10°C (50°F). Along with the varied climate, the wildlife around varies, as the higher the altitude, the more likely it is that taiga and tundra vegetation characteristics will be found.

The wildlife within the Czech Republic varies greatly. Some examples of trees that can be found within the country are oak, beech, and spruce. Large mammals that can be found within the country are bears, wolves, lynx, as well as wildcats. Some smaller mammals include marmots, otters, martens, and minks. Birds, such as pheasants, wild geese, partridges, and ducks are fairly common to find within the Czech Republic as well. Preserving the wildlife and plants found within the Czech Republic is a very important goal to the country’s government. Nature reserves have been established to preserve landscapes, as well as to specially breed rare and endangered species found throughout the country.

The population of the Czech Republic is known to be older and slow growing, however these are both more common trends to find within a developed society. This is because as the women start to obtain equality and join the workforce, the birth rates start to lower. This also occurs when a society undergoes urbanization. Currently, the country’s fertility rate sits at around 1.7 children per woman. The average age within the Czech Republic is around 43.4 years old, and the average life expectancy is estimated to be around 79.5 years old.

The government within the Czech Republic is a multi-party parliamentary representative democracy. The president serves as the formal head of state, and appoints the prime minister. The current president of the Czech Republic is Miloš Zeman, and the current prime minister is Petr Fiala.
