Spain, also known as the Kingdom of Spain, is a transcontinental country that is located majorly on the Iberian Peninsula. The country shares borders with Gibraltar, France, Andorra, as well as Portugal. The country spans an area of 505,990 square kilometers, or 195,360 square miles, which makes it the second largest country in the European Union. With a population of over 47 million, Spain is the 4th most populated country within the EU. The country is also the 30th most populated in the world. The current king of Spain is King Philip IV, while the current prime minister is PM Pedro SΓ‘nchez.
The highest mountain peak within Spain is Mount Teide, reaching a total altitude of 3,175 meters, or 12,188 feet. If the mountain were measured from the ocean floor, it would reach 7,500 meters, or 24,600 feet. This makes it the third largest volcano in the world. The country is transcontinental due to the fact it has territory within both Africa and Europe. The border between Portugal and Spain reaches 1,214 kilometers, or 754 miles, which makes it the longest uninterrupted border within the European Union. Within European territory, Spain is home to the largest number of vascular plant species, which is 7,600. The vegetation of the country is varied due to the fact that Spainβs terrain is very diverse, along with the varied climate and altitude found within the country. There is believed to be around 17.804 million trees within Spain, and it is estimated that an average of 284 million trees grow annually. Commonly found mammals include the wild boar, ibex, as well as red and fallow deer. The country contains an abundance of fish, especially in the area of the country where both the Atlantic and Mediterranean waters mix.
The economy of Spain is mixed, and the 14th largest economy in the world. It is also the 4th largest in the European Union. Popular exports from Spain include cars, vehicle parts, refined petroleum, pig meat, wine, and packaged medicaments. The automobile industry is the largest employer in the country, and in 2015, it was the 8th largest automobile producer in the world and the 2nd in Europe. The tourism industry is another major moneymaker for Spain. In fact, the country was believed to be the 2nd most visited country in the world, with 82 million tourists visiting.
Since 1900, the population of Spain has more than doubled as it currently stands at a population of 47 million inhabitants. Average total fertility rate of Spain is 1.33 children born per woman, which is relatively lower than the replacement rate of 2.1. The country is home to a relatively older population, with an average age of 43.1 years old. Native Spaniards constitute 88% of the population of Spain. The remainder of the population is majorly made up of immigrants. The immigrant population consists of individuals from Latin America, North Africa, Eastern Europe, as well as sub-Saharan Africa. Spainβs five most populated cities include Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, Seville, and Zaragoza.
