The Philippines is an archipelagic country located in Southeast Asia. The country consists of 7,641 islands and is broken up into three geographical zones β Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Spanning an area of 300,000 square kilometers, or 120,000 square miles, the Philippines is the 72nd largest country in the world. 109 million people currently reside within the Philippines, making the country the 13th most populated in the world. The capital city is Manila, while the largest city is Quezon City. The government is a democratic government with a constitutional republic and presidential system. The current president is Bongbong Marcos.
Rivers and mountains are very common to find in the landscape of the Philippines. The highest point on the island is Mount Apo, measuring 2,954 meters, or 9,692 feet above sea level and located on the island of Mindanao. The longest river in the country is the Cagayan River located in northern Luzon, which runs for around 520 kilometers, or 320 miles. The Philippines is located on the western edge of the Ring of Fire, which means that the country faces volcanic activity. Some examples of active volcanoes in the country are Mayon, Mount Pinatubo, and Taal Volcano. The Philippines is one of the worldβs seventeen megadiverse countries. There are over 1,100 species of invertebrate species found on the island, with over 100 mammals and around 243 species of endemic birds. The country is home to the highest rate of discovery, as sixteen species have been discovered within the last ten years. Large reptiles found on the island include the Philippine crocodile and the saltwater crocodile. The Philippine eagle is the national bird, which is known to have the largest body compared to any other eagle. Deforestation has proven to be a large issue for the country, as forest cover has declined from 70% in 1900 to around 18.3% in 1999.
The economy of the Philippines is newly industrialized, and is moving from an agricultural based economy to one more focused on industry and services. The primary exports of the country are integrated circuits, office machine parts, insulated wire, electrical transformers, bananas, gold, refined copper. The major trading partners of the Philippines are China, the United States, Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Germany. Currently, the agricultural sector employs 24.3% of the workforce, the industrial sector employs 19% of the workforce, and the service sector employs 57%.
From the years 1990 to 2008, the Philippines population increased by 45%, or 28 million people. A third of the countryβs entire population lives within the Metro Manila region, or the National Capital Region. The five largest cities within the country are Quezon City, Manila, Davao City, Caloocan, and Zamboanga City. The annual population growth rate has decreased over the years, and it currently stands at 1.34%. Population density of the Philippines measures 336/square kilometer, or 870 per square mile. The government has been focused on finding ways to reduce population growth, and many health acts have been established in order to promote reproductive health.
