Malaysia is a country located in Southeast Asia that is known to be both multicultural and multiethnic. The country is split into two regions β Peninsular Malaysia and Borneoβs East Malaysia. Kuala Lumpur is the nationβs capital, as well as the largest city and home to the legislative branch of the countryβs federal government. Holding a population of over 32 million inhabitants, Malaysia is the 45th most populated country in the world. The country is also one of 17 megadiverse countries in the world, home to an abundance of endemic species. Malaysia is home to a federal constitutional elective monarchy, making it the only federal country in Southeast Asia.
The total land area of Malaysia is 329,613 square kilometers or 127,264 square miles. The two separate parts of Malaysia are split up by the South China Sea and both share geographically similar characteristics. Peninsular Malaysia consists of 40% of the land area and consists of numerous mountain ranges and forests. East Borneo Malaysia is home to the highest point within the country, Mount Kinabalu, with an elevation of 4,095 meters, or 13,435 feet. Surrounding the two parts of Malaysia are several smaller islands. The largest of these is Banggi. The climate is known to be tropical as well as monsoon periods. With such large amounts of biodiversity, Malaysia is believed to be home to 20% of all the worldβs animal species. The country contains around 210 mammal species, 620 bird species, 250 reptile species, 150 snake species, 80 lizard species, 150 species of frog and over thousands of insect species. The government of Malaysia believes strongly in a balance of economic growth as well as environmental protection. As of 2007, two-thirds of the country was covered in forests, with many of these forests believed to be over 130 million years old.
The economy is an open state-oriented and newly industrialized economy. In terms of nominal GDP, Malaysia is home to the worldβs 34th largest economy. Along with this, the labor force of Malaysia is the 34th largest, with around 15 million people. Malaysia is a major producer of rubber and palm oil, and is also one of the worldβs largest sources of commercial hardwoods. Exports from Malaysia often include natural gasses, as well as petroleum. The country is also home to a large automobile industry, which ranks 22nd in the world. In 2020, Malaysia exported high-tech products with a total worth of $92.1 billion.
Half of the population of Malaysia is ethnically Malay, while other minorities include Chinese, Indians, as well as other indigenous people. The official language of the country is Malaysian, while English serves as a secondary language. The majority of the Malaysian population is located in Peninsular Malaysia, with 20 million people. 70% of the population is located within urban centers. The five largest cities within Malaysia are Kuala Lumpur, Seberang Perai, Kajang, Petaling Jaya, and Subang Jaya. Malaysia is currently home to a population of 171,500 asylum seekers and refugees.
