Michigan has the distinct honor of having more miles of freshwater shoreline than any other state in the United States. That's because it's bordered by four of the five great lakes - Lake Erie, Lake Huron, Lake Michigan, and Lake Superior. As a result, Michigan is known for commercial and sport fishing and is the state with the most boat registrations in the nation.
Aside from sportfishing, Michigan is an outdoor lover's paradise for other popular activities such as biking, camping, canoeing, diving, and snorkeling. And for golf enthusiasts, there are over 700 beautiful courses to choose from.
There is also another interesting distinction about the state of Michigan. Out of all the states, it's the only one that has two peninsulas. The Lower Peninsula (shaped like a mitten) and the Upper Peninsula are separated by the Straits of Mackinac. They're connected by the Mackinac Bridge.
While Michigan's economy is diverse, the automotive industry (namely Detroit) is what put it on the map. Detroit has long been dubbed 'Motor City' and the 'Car Capital of the World' despite past struggles to maintain its status as a thriving automotive manufacturing hub.
Celebrities born in Michigan include comedian and actor David Spade, the late filmmaker John Hughes, wrestling personality Eric Bischoff, and model and actress Christie Brinkley. While no U.S. presidents were born in Michigan, Gerald Ford gets a decisive nod. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but lived nearly his whole life in Michigan.
Fun facts about Michigan: it's the only place in the world where you'll find a floating post office, the world's largest weathervane, and the largest crucifix in the world. Also, if you visit the city of Grand Haven along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, you'll hear the famous 'singing sands.' It's one of a handful of places in the world where sand particles make a whistling sound when you walk on them.
Finally, did you know that the world's largest manufacturer of magic supplies is based in the small, rural village of Colon, Michigan? It's true! Magicians from all over the world shop for their supplies at Abbott's Magic Company, founded in Colon in 1927.
