Indiana, also known as The Hoosier State, took statehood in 1816, and there are many beautiful historical maps that feature this Midwest state.

At Ted's Vintage Maps archives, we have an extensive collection of old Indiana maps. They include nearly every county in the state, including Marion, Lake, Allen, Hamilton, St. Joseph, Elkhart, Tippecanoe, Vanderburgh, Porter, and Hendricks. Our most commonly requested maps for Indiana are typically for the cities of Indianapolis, Fort Wayne, Evansville, South Bend, Carmel, Fishers, Bloomington, Hammond, Gary, and Lafayette.

The state of Indiana is part of the eight-state Great Lakes Region, with Lake Michigan bordering it on the northwest. Indiana's beach along Lake Michigan is where you'll find a mile-long stretch of sand coined the 'singing sands.' The sand there makes a whistling sound as you walk along the beach. In other areas of Indiana, you'll find flat land, low rolling hills, valleys, sand ridges and dunes, and bedrock landscapes with caves and caverns.

Indiana's economy is primarily manufacturing. Its top three exports are motor vehicles and auto parts, pharmaceuticals, and industrial machinery. Top companies based in the state include Cummins, Inc., Eli Lilly and Company, Anthem, and Thor Industries.

The state is probably best known for being home to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Every May, over 300,000 people gather at the speedway for the Indianapolis 500 race, nicknamed 'The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.' The Indy 500 is the largest single-day event in the world. The speedway also hosts other popular races throughout the year, such as the Brickyard 400 and the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix.

In other professional sports, the state is home to the NFL Indianapolis Colts and the NBA Indiana Pacers. And in college sports, it’s the Notre Dame Fighting Irish athletic teams of Notre Dame University.

Famous Hoosiers include Larry Bird (former NBA basketball player), Florence Henderson (of "Brady Bunch" fame), David Letterman (former late-night television host), and Jim Davis (creator of the famous "Garfield" comic strip, which first appeared in 1978). Also, although former U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky, he spent 14 years of his boyhood in Indiana. The Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial in Lincoln City, Indiana, honors his early years growing up in the state.

Finally, here are some fun facts about the state of Indiana: Corn is huge in Indiana, where more than 20% of the United States' popcorn supply is made. The state is also the birthplace of popcorn king Orville Redenbacher. The Raggedy Ann doll, which dates back to the early 1900s, was created in the Hoosier State by writer Johnny Gruelle. The doll was based on a series of children's books he wrote and illustrated. The town of Santa Claus, Indiana, receives over 500,000 Christmas letters each year. Famous movies filmed in Indiana include "Rudy," starring Sean Astin, "Hoosiers," starring Gene Hackman, and "A League of Their Own," starring Tom Hanks, Gina Davis, and Madonna.

How to Choose the Right Map

Start with the place or subject that matters, then choose the artwork, format, and size that best fit your space and story.

Choose a hometown, favorite destination, family location, military base, park, lake, railroad, or other place that carries a personal connection.

Try searching by a city, county, state, landmark, year, or specific place name.

Look closely at the map year, geographic coverage, orientation, labels, landmarks, and overall visual style. Different maps of the same place can tell very different stories.

Use the product images and zoom tools to inspect streets, names, boundaries, and historic features.

Select an unframed print for flexibility, a ready-to-hang solid wood frame for a finished presentation, or a wrapped canvas for a clean gallery-style appearance.

Framed prints include protective plexiglass and arrive ready to hang.

Consider the wall, furniture, viewing distance, and amount of visual impact you want. Larger maps make striking focal points, while smaller sizes work well in offices, studies, entryways, and grouped displays.

Measure the available wall area before choosing your final print size.
