Italy is a country that makes up a peninsula and several other islands located in Southern Europe. Spanning an area of 301,230 square kilometers (or 116,310 square miles), Italy shares borders with France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia. Italy also homes two enclaved microstates, Vatican City and San Marino. The capital and largest city within Italy is Rome. With a total population of 60,317,116 inhabitants, Italy is the 3rd largest country within the European Union. The country is home to a parliamentary government with both a president and prime minister. The current president is Sergio Mattarella, and the current prime minister is Mario Draghi.

Over 35% of all of Italy’s territory is mountainous. A great majority of the landscapes formed in Italy have volcanic origin. There are fourteen total volcanoes in Italy, with only four being active to this day. The active volcanoes are as follows: Mount Etna in Sicily (which is also the largest active volcano in Europe), Vulcano, Stromboli, and Vesuvius. The highest point associated with Italy is Mont Blanc, standing at an altitude of 4,807 meters, or 15,777 feet. Although the peak is located within France, Mont Blanc is owned by both France and Italy, ultimately making it the highest point of Italy.

Italy is home to one of the largest animal biodiversity, with a recorded 57,000 species, which makes up one third of all European animals. The varied landscapes within Italy can be accounted for by the vast population of different plants and animals. There are 4,777 endemic species found within Italy, such as the Sardinian long-eared bat, Sardinian red deer, spectacled salamander, brown cave salamander, Italian newt, and Italian frog. Within Italy there are a total of 119 mammal species, 550 bird species, 69 reptile species, 39 amphibian species, 623 fish species, and 56,213 invertebrate species, 37,303 of these being insects.

Italy is home to a major advanced economy, and is the eighth largest economy in the world. The country is best known for its competitive agricultural sector, as well as the large manufacturing and industry sector. Some of the major exports of Italy include cars, vehicle parts, packaged medicaments, refined petroleum, wine, and valves. Italy is the world’s largest wine exporter, with its most famous wines being Tuscan Chianti and Piedmontese Barolo. Italy is also amongst the top producers of olive oils, several fruits such as apples and olives, as well as vegetables like artichokes and tomatoes.

With a median age of 46.5 years old, Italy is home to the fifth oldest population in the world. In fact, one in five Italians is over the age of 65. The current fertility rate is 1.41 children per woman, however that is still considerably below the replacement rate of 2.1. It is estimated that by 2030, the fertility rate will grow to 1.6-1.8. The life expectancy in Italy has been able to rise in the past few decades as medical standards and hygienic standards continue to rise. Currently, the life expectancy is 83.20 years.

How to Choose the Right Map

Start with the place or subject that matters, then choose the artwork, format, and size that best fit your space and story.

Choose a hometown, favorite destination, family location, military base, park, lake, railroad, or other place that carries a personal connection.

Try searching by a city, county, state, landmark, year, or specific place name.

Look closely at the map year, geographic coverage, orientation, labels, landmarks, and overall visual style. Different maps of the same place can tell very different stories.

Use the product images and zoom tools to inspect streets, names, boundaries, and historic features.

Select an unframed print for flexibility, a ready-to-hang solid wood frame for a finished presentation, or a wrapped canvas for a clean gallery-style appearance.

Framed prints include protective plexiglass and arrive ready to hang.

Consider the wall, furniture, viewing distance, and amount of visual impact you want. Larger maps make striking focal points, while smaller sizes work well in offices, studies, entryways, and grouped displays.

Measure the available wall area before choosing your final print size.
