Italy’s familiar outline long concealed a patchwork of separate states. Before unification, the peninsula was divided among kingdoms, duchies, republics, and territories governed by the pope. The Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed in 1861, but its borders continued to change: Venetia joined in 1866, and Rome was incorporated in 1870. Earlier maps therefore require a different political lens. The Kingdom of Sardinia, for example, included Piedmont and other mainland territories as well as the island whose name it carried.

Italy also played a central role in European mapmaking. Medieval portolan charts served Mediterranean navigation with detailed coastal names and networks of compass directions. During the Renaissance, Venice became an important center for printing maps and geographical works. Later surveying brought more systematic measurements of terrain, roads, and settlements. These traditions answered different needs: a mariner sought harbors and coastal landmarks, while a government needed boundaries, mountain passes, and routes through the interior.

When comparing historical maps of Italy, look beyond the coastline to the labels and borders. English-language maps may call Livorno “Leghorn,” while political boundaries can reveal divisions that disappeared during unification. Following routes across the Alps or along the Po Valley can also help explain how geography shaped connections between communities that once belonged to different states.

France is a country located in northwestern Europe, and is known to be a transcontinental territory. In fact, its several coastal territories cause France to have the largest economic zone in the world. Spanning a total land area of 643,801 square kilometers (248,573 square miles), France is home to over 67 million people. The largest city is Paris, which serves as the country’s main cultural and commercial center. Other large cities within France are Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse, Lille, Bordeaux, and Nice. France is also Europe’s most important agricultural producer and one of the world’s leading industrial powers. France is a representative democracy, with both a president and prime minister. The current president is Emmanuel Macron, while the current prime minister is Élisabeth Borne. The general landscape within France is extremely varied, which is thanks to the coastlines of the country. Mountain ranges can be found along the French Riviera, coastal cliffs such as the Côte d’Albâtre, and wide sandy plains can be found in the Languedoc. France is also home to a large river system which consists of four main rivers. These four are the Seine, the Loire, the Garonne, and the Rhône. Because of such large territory, the climate within France is also varied. For example, in France, one can expect to witness the alpine tundra climate or ice cap climate, while someone else may be experiencing hot-summer mediterranean climate or oceanic climate. The plant life of France is very similar to the climate, so plants exist within two zones: the Holarctic province and the Mediterranean province. The most common trees found within the France landscape are chestnut, pine, and beech. Oak used to be extremely common, however a great majority of its population has been cleared out due to cultivation. Some common animals one may find in France are red deer, roe deer, and wild boar. Endangered species of France include badgers, otters, beavers, tortoises, marmots, and the brown bear. Seals were once common to find on french coasts, however they have now since almost entirely disappeared. With its large population of 67 million people or so, France is the 20th most populated country in the world, and is also the third most populated country in Europe, following Russia and Germany. In the European Union, France is the second most populated after Germany. France is a developed country, however it is often seen as an outlier due to its continuous large growth rates. Between the years of 2006 and 2016, the country saw the second-highest overall increase in population. It was also one out of four EU countries where births accounted for a great majority of the growth. This was the highest rate of birth growth since the end of the baby boom of 1973. All throughout history, France has stuck by its nickname of “the granary of the old continent”, as around half of its land area is used as farmland. France remains as the world’s sixth largest exporter of agricultural goods. Its primary exports are wheat, poultry, dairy, beef, and pork. as well as internationally recognized brands, mainly beverages.

Switzerland, a landlocked country, is located in between Western, Central, and Southern Europe. It is bordered by Italy, France, Germany, Austria, and Liechtenstein. The country spans a total area of 41,285 square kilometers, or 15,940 square miles. Switzerland is home to a population of 8.7 million inhabitants, which is concentrated mainly on the plateau near large urban areas. The three largest cities and economic centers within Switzerland are Zürich, Geneva, and Basel. Switzerland has no official capital city, however the city of Bern is the unofficial-official seat of government. The government is a direct democracy, and the current president is Ignazio Cassis. Switzerland is a country home to numerous mountains. 14% of the Alps entire land area is located within Switzerland. 48 of these mountains reach over 4,000 meters above sea level, or 13,000 feet. Monte Rosa is the highest point of the country, reaching an altitude of 4,634 meters or 15,203 feet. The country is more populated in the northern part of the country, which contains 30% of the country’s entire population. This more populated area is called the Swiss Plateau, and is home to more open and hilly landscapes rather than large mountains. The animal life of Switzerland is primarily Alpine. Within forests, one can expect to find deer, rabbits, foxes, badgers, squirrels, as well as many types of birds, including eagles. Snakes and lizards are also commonly found animals in southern regions of the country. Switzerland is a country that has recently started to put stricter enforcements on protecting the environment and the land around them. Animal life is protected yearly with the exception of a brief hunting season. The country pledges to reach zero greenhouse gas emissions by the year 2050, and also pledged to reduce the emissions by 50% by the year 2030. Switzerland is home to a stable economy that is known for being high-tech. The country is very wealthy, and has been ranked as the world’s richest country in numerous rankings. Switzerland also serves as one of the world’s centers for life sciences. Some of the largest exports from Switzerland are packaged medicaments, gold, blood, antisera, vaccines, toxins and cultures, base metal watches, and jewelry. The most important economic sector to Switzerland is manufacturing, which includes the production of specialist chemicals, health and pharmaceutical goods, as well as precision measuring instruments and musical instruments. Like many other developed countries, Switzerland’s population rapidly increased during the industrial revolution. Currently, the population is aging, and the country is home to one of the oldest populations in the world, with an average age of 42.5 years old. The birthrate of Switzerland is also very low, and is estimated to be only around half of the world’s average. As of 2020, immigrant residents made up 25.7% of the country’s entire population, which is one of the largest rates within the developed world. The name “Austria” originates from the German word “east”. Austria is consistently ranked one of the richest countries to live in due to the high GDP per capita and was also ranked 18th best on the Human Development Index. Because of its location in the Alps, Austria is a country that is majority made up of mountains. Only about a quarter of the entire area can be considered flatland, and only 32% of the country sits below 1,640 feet. Because of this, the climate in Austria is cool and temperate. There are very cool winters, as well as hot and humid summers. However, the summers are typically cooler near mountains than in lower altitudes. Austria is made up of nine federal states and they are as follows: Burgenland, Carinthia, Lower Austria, Salzburg, Styria. Tyrol, Upper Austria, Vienna, and Vorarlberg. The most populated out of these nine is Vienna, which is also the capital of Austria. In fact, Vienna is by far the most populated city located in Austria, with a population of around 1.9 million individuals. To compare that, the second most populated city is Graz, with around 270,000 individuals. Currently, Austria is a federal representative democratic republic, and has been since 1920. The current president of Austria is Alexander Van der Bellen. Austria has a very politically rich background when it comes to its history. In 1995, Austria joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace, and also participated in peacekeeping missions. Along with this, Austria also signed the UN’s Nuclear War Ban Treaty, which is a treaty that all other members of NATO opposed. Due to a very highly industrialized economy and well-developed market, Austria has continuously been able to rank high in GDP per capita. Since joining the European Union, Austria has opened up numerous trade opportunities with surrounding countries as well as giving foreign investors interest into the Austrian market. Throughout history, Austria has been a powerhouse for music, specifically classical music. In fact, Vienna was once considered the European capital for classical music. Some of the most famous composers in history were born in Austria, such as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Johann Strauss Jr. and Sr., Joseph and Michael Haydn, and Franz Liszt. So many were drawn to Vienna for music due to the 18th and 19th century patronages of the Habsburgs, which was once the most prominent royal dynasty within Austria. And finally, some fun facts about Austria: The Austrian flag is one of the oldest flags in the world, with its first recorded use being in 1230. Austria is home to the tallest waterfalls in Europe, known by the name “Krimmler Wasserfälle”. Until 1955, Austria was separated into numerous zones that different countries had control over.
