Iraq is a country located in western Asia, bordered by Turkey, Iran, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, and Syria. With a total population of 40,222,503, Iraq is a country home to numerous ethnicities and religions, making it a very diverse country. The capital and largest city is Baghdad. Some other large cities in Iraq are Mosul, Basra, and Sulaymaniyah. The official languages of the country are Arabic and Kurdish, however many others are recognized as well, such as English, Neo-Amharic, Turkish, and Armenian. The government is a democratic federal parliamentary republic, and the current president is Barham Salih.

The landscape of Iraq is very diverse. In fact, Iraq contains seven different terrestrial ecoregions, and they are as follows: Zagros Mountains forest steppe, Middle East steppe, Mesopotamian Marshes, Eastern Mediterranean conifer forests, Arabian Desert, Mesopotamian shrub desert, and South Iran Nubo-Sindian desert and semi-desert. The two major rivers of Iraq are the Tigris and the Euphrates river. These two rivers flow into plains, and they both carry silt. The highest point within Iraq is the Cheekha Dar, which stands at an elevation of 3,611 meters (or 11,847 feet) high. The climate of Iraq is hot and arid, along with subtropical influence. The average temperature in the summer is around 40°C (104°F), and can easily exceed temperatures of 48°C (118°F). The plant and animal life in Iraq varies greatly, which can be due to the varied landscapes and climate zones found within Iraq. For example, the marshes found in Iraq are home to over 40 different species of birds, as well as several species of fish. However, the draining in these marshes poses a threat to many of the bird population within. The waters surrounding Iraq are home to a large coral reef, which is home to numerous species, such as living stone coral, octocorals, ophiuroids, and bivalves. Some common mammals found within Iraq include wild boars, bactrian camel, fallow and roe deer, wild goats, goitered gazelle, and the European hare.

The economy of Iraq is dominated by the oil industry, which accounts for 95% of foreign exchange earnings. However, there is not much employment. When it comes to women, only around 22% are employed in the workforce. Agriculture is the main occupation for the people, and around one-eighth of all of Iraq’s land is arable. The most popular crops are barley, wheat, rice, vegetables, corn (maize), millet, sugarcane, sugar beets, oil seeds, fruit, fodder, tobacco, and cotton.

Iraq is a developing country, and because of this, the population is predominantly young. Two-fifths of the population are under the age of 15, and two-thirds are under 30. Because of such a young population, Iraq has a low death rate due to the majorly younger population. The life expectancy for women is 76, while it is 73 for men. The native population is primarily Arabs, however other large groups include Kurds, Turkmens, Assyrians, Yazidis, Shabaks, Armenians, Sabian-Mandeans, Circassians, and Kawliya. Iraq is home to the fourth largest population in the Middle East.
