Iran Maps

Historical maps of Iran often emphasize the country’s rugged spineβ€”Zagros and Alborz rangesβ€”and the routes and coastal approaches that shaped settlement and trade. These prints invite careful looking: compare older spellings and boundary lines, and notice how earlier mapmakers represented places now familiar under the name Iran.

Iran’s borders took shape through centuries of imperial rule, regional rivalry, and negotiated frontiers. During the nineteenth century, Qajar Iran ceded territories in the Caucasus to the Russian Empire, helping establish the northern boundary recognizable today. Tehran’s emergence as the Qajar capital in the late eighteenth century also shifted political attention northward from earlier centers such as Isfahan, the great Safavid capital.

Mapping Iran required more than tracing political divisions. The Zagros and Alborz mountain ranges, the central deserts, and scarce water sources shaped travel and settlement. Historical mapmakers drew on travelers’ accounts, route measurements, and later surveys to locate towns and connections across this terrain. Caravan routes linked cities including Tabriz, Isfahan, and Shiraz with neighboring regions and Persian Gulf ports, making commercial geography an important part of the mapping record.

When comparing historical maps of Iran, pay attention to both names and boundaries. European-language maps commonly used β€œPersia”; in 1935, the government requested international use of β€œIran,” a name long established within the country. Older spellings of cities may likewise reflect different transliteration practices rather than different places. Reading these labels alongside routes and relief helps distinguish a change in cartographic convention from a change on the ground.

How to Choose the Right Map

Start with the place or subject that matters, then choose the artwork, format, and size that best fit your space and story.

Choose a hometown, favorite destination, family location, military base, park, lake, railroad, or other place that carries a personal connection.

Try searching by a city, county, state, landmark, year, or specific place name.

Look closely at the map year, geographic coverage, orientation, labels, landmarks, and overall visual style. Different maps of the same place can tell very different stories.

Use the product images and zoom tools to inspect streets, names, boundaries, and historic features.

Select an unframed print for flexibility, a ready-to-hang solid wood frame for a finished presentation, or a wrapped canvas for a clean gallery-style appearance.

Framed prints include protective plexiglass and arrive ready to hang.

Consider the wall, furniture, viewing distance, and amount of visual impact you want. Larger maps make striking focal points, while smaller sizes work well in offices, studies, entryways, and grouped displays.

Measure the available wall area before choosing your final print size.
