Georgia, which took statehood in 1788 and is affectionately known as ‘The Peach State,’ has had many beautiful, historic maps designed over the years that capture its spirit.

Georgia is the largest state east of the Mississippi and is known for being the birthplace of the passionate civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. His tomb is located in his hometown of Atlanta at the city’s Martin Luther King Jr. National Historical Park.

Former U.S. President Jimmy Carter was also born in Georgia where his family famously operated a peanut farm. Other notable names from the state include singer-songwriter Usher, actress Julia Roberts, and professional baseball player Jackie Robinson.

Georgia’s economy is based on health care, retail, and professional and technical services. Major companies that are headquartered in Georgia include Home Depot, UPS, Delta Airlines, Aflac, and Coca-Cola (the soft drink was actually invented in Atlanta, Georgia back in 1886).

The state is also rich in agriculture. It’s known for peanuts, peaches, Vidalia onions, and pecans. Did you know that Georgia is the #1 producer of pecans in the world? It’s also one of the top five blueberry producers in the United States.

Georgia is bordered by the states of Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, and Alabama, plus the Atlantic Ocean. It has five distinct geographical regions - the Appalachian Plateau, the Valley and Ridge, the Blue Ridge, and the Coastal Plain.

When it comes to weather, Georgia is known for its humid, subtropical climate that encompasses the entire state, with the exception of some high-altitude areas in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Fun facts about Georgia include:

Georgia’s state fish is the largemouth bass. The state song is “Georgia On My Mind” by Ray Charles. Atlanta is home to the largest aquarium in the world, the Georgia Aquarium. The largest swamp in North America is located in Georgia. The sweet taste of a Vidalia onion, which is only grown in Georgia, is due to the low amount of sulfur in the soil.

Finally, here’s one last interesting side note to leave you with. The 1980s television show Dukes of Hazzard was set in the fictional place of Hazzard County, Georgia. If you watch the first several episodes carefully, you might notice some differences from later episodes. That’s because the first five were filmed in Georgia before production was moved to Burbank, California.
