Detroit’s street pattern reflects two different ways of organizing land: long, narrow farms fronting the Detroit River and an ambitious rebuilding plan after the fire of 1805. French-era “ribbon farms” gave landholders access to the waterfront while extending inland. After the fire, Judge Augustus Woodward proposed broad avenues and geometric public spaces. Only part of that plan took shape, leaving a downtown layout that differs from the more regular grids beyond it.

These overlapping patterns give historical mapmaking in Detroit particular value. Survey and property maps could record farm boundaries, subdivisions, and street extensions, while city plans emphasized routes and public spaces. As Detroit grew into a manufacturing center, railroad lines, riverfront facilities, and industrial land became increasingly important subjects for cartographers. Maps made for different purposes can therefore tell different stories about the same neighborhood, from legal ownership to connections with regional trade.

While no U.S. presidents were born in Michigan, Gerald Ford gets a decisive nod. He was born in Omaha, Nebraska, but lived nearly his whole life in Michigan. Fun facts about Michigan: it's the only place in the world where you'll find a floating post office, the world's largest weathervane, and the largest crucifix in the world. Also, if you visit the city of Grand Haven along the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, you'll hear the famous 'singing sands.'
