West Virginia’s statehood in 1863 changed the political meaning of a landscape long mapped as part of Virginia. The split grew out of the Civil War and longstanding differences between Virginia’s eastern and western regions. On maps made before statehood, places now familiar as West Virginian appear within Virginia’s boundaries, so a map’s date is essential to understanding its labels and jurisdictional lines.

Mountain ridges and river valleys shaped another important story: how communities connected to markets. The Ohio River supported commerce along the western border, while railroads opened routes to coalfields and timberlands during the nineteenth century. Historical state maps often emphasized county boundaries, towns, and transportation connections; more detailed local maps could show how streets and development followed narrow valleys. This collection includes state maps and city maps of places such as Wheeling, Grafton, and Morgantown.

Comparing maps at different scales can help explain why nearby communities developed along different routes. Virginia, nicknamed both The Old Dominion and Mother of Presidents, took statehood in 1788. Over the years, there have been countless beautiful, antique maps created for the state. From taking in the gorgeous views of the Blue Mountain Range to dipping your toes in the ocean along the beaches of Chesapeake Bay or stepping back in history in Colonial Williamsburg, there's much to love about Virginia. It's a state where forests cover over 60 percent of the land, there are 544 miles of the Appalachian Trail to hike, and where a state senator formed the idea for Earth Day back in 1969. Virginia is also known for being home to the largest naval base in the world. Naval Station Norfolk is the home base for the United States Navy's Atlantic Fleet. You'll also find the largest office building in the world in Virginia. The Pentagon is approximately 6.5 million square feet and has 17 miles of corridors. Also, did you know there are nearly 68,000 miles of internal telephone lines inside the Pentagon? Or that the cost to build it back in 1943 was $63 million? That would be nearly a billion dollars in today’s money. Virginia's economy is not surprisingly steeped in military and federal government with the naval base and Pentagon on deck. Farming and the high-tech industry are big players as well. Other notable companies based in Virginia include the Marriott Corporation, Dollar Tree, and Rubbermaid Commercial Products. Virginia holds the honor of being the U.S. state that has produced the most presidents. It's where it gets its nickname as the Mother of Presidents. Eight presidents were born in Virginia, and they include George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Woodrow Wilson. Of course, many celebrities hail from Virginia. Among them are actor Warren Beatty, journalist Katie Couric, evangelist Pat Robertson, singer Pharrell Williams, and rapper Missy Elliott. And finally, did you know there's an island in Virginia where wild horses roam? There are two herds split between the Virginia and the Maryland sides of the island on Assateague Island, which spans 37 miles between the two states. Around 300 of the horses roam the island's protected areas. Visitors to the area are allowed to view the horses but cautioned to give the wild animals space.

Ohio took statehood in 1803, and many beautiful historical maps feature this Midwest state. At Ted’s Vintage Maps archives, we have an extensive collection of old Ohio maps. They include nearly every county in the state (Franklin, Cuyahoga, Hamilton, Summit, Montgomery, Lucas, Butler, Stark, Lorain, and Mahoning). Our most commonly requested maps for Ohio are typically for the cities of Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Dayton, Parma, Canton, Youngstown, and Lorain. The state of Ohio is named after the Ohio River, which originated from a Seneca word meaning “good river” or “great river.” Nicknames include the Buckeye State (a reference to the state tree, the buckeye) and the Birthplace of Aviation (the Wright brothers were born in Dayton, Ohio). Other notable people who hail from Ohio include Thomas Edison, inventor of the lightbulb; astronaut Neil Armstrong; and Steven Spielberg, the famous film director, producer, and screenwriter. Actress Doris Day, professional basketball player Lebron James, and comedian Phyllis Diller are also Ohioans. Ohio’s economy is based on agriculture, insurance and banking, steel production, and research and development. Kroger, Eaton Corporation, Procter & Gamble, National Machinery, and Goodyear are the five largest companies in the state. Tourism is also a significant driver of the state’s economy. The iconic Morton Salt company is worth a mention as well. They’ve been mining salt 2,000 feet beneath Lake Erie, just 30 miles east of Cleveland, since the 1950s. Did you know the state of Ohio produces 5 million tons of rock salt annually? Much of that comes from Morton Salt. Here’s another fun fact you may not know. The National Football League (NFL) was founded in Canton, Ohio, back in 1920. At that time, it was called the American Professional Football Association. The pro football league was renamed NFL two years later, in 1922. Ohio is also home to the well-known Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, located in Cleveland. It was established in 1983 by the late Ahmet Ertegun, who was the founder and chairman of Atlantic Records. And we can’t forget to mention the famous Amish Country. Ohio has the largest Amish population (Pennsylvania runs a close second). Visitors can take a tour of the Amish countryside and experience a slice of their way of life. Finally, the Great Blizzard of 1899 gave Ohio its lowest recorded temperature to date. It dropped to a bone-chilling minus 39 degrees Fahrenheit on February 10, 1899, in Milligan, Ohio. The historic cold wave (also called the Great Arctic Outbreak of 1899 and the St. Valentine's Day Blizzard) impacted much of the United States. The hardest-hit areas were east of the Rocky Mountains. Ohio’s highest recorded temperature was 113 degrees Fahrenheit on July 21, 1934, in Gallipolis.

The ‘Bluegrass State’ of Kentucky is known for being home to thoroughbred horse racing, bluegrass music, top-shelf bourbon, and coal mining. In horse racing, the Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville hosts the famous Kentucky Derby, the Triple Crown’s first leg. The horse race, dubbed “The Most Exciting Two Minutes in Sports,” draws an on-track attendance of 150,000 spectators and is televised nationwide. The Preakness Stakes and Belmont Stakes follow, and a horse must win all three races to win the prestigious Triple Crown. And, of course, there are the derby hats. The tradition of wearing lavish hats to the Kentucky Derby began with the first race in 1875. Founder Co. Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr., wanted his race to be like ones across the pond in Europe, where women sported hats. His hat idea took hold and has been a staple of Kentucky Derby fashion ever since. Today, women attending the derby will spend between $250 to $600 for a fashionable derby hat. And custom designs can run over $1,000. Outside of horse racing, Kentucky has some of the most stunning scenery in the United States. A portion of the beautiful, heavily forested Appalachian Mountains runs through the state. Then there are the hiking trails, rock formations, and green forests of the Red River Gorge, making it one of the state's most visited places. Mammoth Cave National Park is another favorite destination—it’s where you'll find the world's longest cave system. And Kentucky's Cumberland Falls is the only place in the Western Hemisphere where you can see a moonbow (a rainbow produced by moonlight). Kentucky is also home to Fort Knox, a U.S. Army installation outside of Louisville, where the nation’s official gold reserves are held. Only a few people know the actual structure of the building that houses the gold, and security dictates that no one person knows all of the procedures to open the vault. We’ll end with some famous folks who were born in the state of Kentucky. They include our 16th U.S. President, Abraham Lincoln, pioneer Daniel Boone, professional boxer Muhammad Ali, and singer/songwriter Loretta Lynn.
