Sea routes connected the West Indies long before European colonization, linking islands inhabited by Taíno, Kalinago, and other Indigenous peoples. From the late fifteenth century onward, European empires competed for islands, harbors, and shipping passages. Sugar plantations, sustained for centuries by enslaved African labor, made control of ports and sea lanes especially valuable. The region’s political geography became a patchwork of colonies whose boundaries reflected imperial rivalry rather than the islands’ physical arrangement.

That history shaped how cartographers represented the Caribbean. Regional maps commonly distinguished colonial possessions through labels or color, while nautical charts emphasized coastlines, reefs, anchorages, and water depths. A small island could receive close attention because it guarded a passage or offered a sheltered harbor. Geographic groupings such as the Greater Antilles, Lesser Antilles, and Bahamas helped organize the region, but they did not correspond neatly to political borders.

Comparing historical maps can reveal changes in sovereignty as well as naming conventions. Hispaniola offers a useful example: Haiti’s independence in 1804 transformed the political meaning of the island’s western portion. Elsewhere, French, Spanish, Dutch, and English place names can point to successive colonial claims. Cuba is an island country surrounded by numerous archipelagos, and is classified as a North America country with its location in the Carribeans. Not counting the area waters, the total area of Cuba is 109,884 square kilometers (that’s 42,426 square miles), with a total population of over 11 million inhabitants. This makes Cuba the second most populated country in the Carribeans, following Haiti. The largest city in Cuba is Havana, which just so happens to be the country’s capital. Some other large cities within Cuba include Santiago de Cuba and Camagüey. When it comes to culture, Cuba is considered a part of Latin America due to the multiethnic population Cuba holds, which brings multiple different cultures within. The entire climate of Cuba is very tropical. The country experiences winds year round due to the fact that it is an island and such close proximity to waters. Along with this, Cuba is very susceptible to hurricanes. The most recent hurricane to hit Cuba was Hurricane Ida in 2021, where it cost Cuba $100 million dollars in damages, as well as $40 million dollars lost in insurance money.Cuba is a very biodiverse country, as well as a country that cares for its environment. In fact, according to a 2012 study, Cuba was one of the only countries in the world that met regulations set by the World Wildlife Fund. Since the 1960’s, the Cuban government has been able to replant many trees previously destroyed due to deforestation. Now, forests cover around a fourth of the island’s area. Cuba is home to 17,801 species of animals, 270 species of bacteria, 9,107 species of plants, 5,844 species of fungi, and 1,440 species of protozoa. The national bird of Cuba is the Cuban Trogon, which was named as its red, white, and blue feathers match the colors of the Cuban flag. Cuba is also home to the world’s smallest bird, which is called the bee hummingbird. The birth rate of Cuba is 9.88 births per thousand population, making this rate one of the lowest within the Western Hemisphere. Along with this, Cuba faces low fertility rates, coming in at around 1.43 children per woman. Because of these low rates, as well as emigration rates, Cuba is slowly starting to face a population decrease. The reasoning for such low fertility rates among women are due to the abortion rates within Cuba as well as the highspread usage of numerous contraceptives. Politically, Cuba is one of few countries that follow socialism and Marxist-Leninist ideology. The current leader of Cuba is Miguel Díaz-Canel, who is actually the first non-Castro leader of Cuba following the Cuban Revolution of 1959. The highest point in Jamaica is Blue Mountain Peak, located in the Blue Mountains. This peak stands at an altitude of 2,256 meters, or 7,401 feet. The climate of Jamaica is tropical, as temperatures are typically hot and humid. Because of its location in the Atlantic Ocean, Jamaica is prone to hurricanes, and storm damage is often caused. Some of the most damaging hurricanes to hit the island are Hurricanes Charlie, Gilbert, Ivan, Dean, and Gustav. Because of the tropical climate, the ecosystems of Jamaica are rich with plants and animals. There are many species of bat found on the island, including three different endemic species. There are 50 different species of reptiles found on the island, which include lizards like anoles, iguanas, snakes, and the largest reptile, which is the American Crocodile. Tree frogs are also very common to find on the island, as well as the Jamaican slider, a freshwater turtle native to the country. Jamaica is home to 289 species of birds, and 27 of these are endemic to the island. Jamaica has a mixed economy with major sectors being agriculture, mining, manufacturing, and tourism. The country’s agricultural exports include sugar, bananas, cocoa, coconut, molasses, oranges, limes, grapefruit, rum, yam, allspice, and Blue Mountain Coffee. Tourism in Jamaica has been the largest foreign exchange earner. In 2017, it was estimated that 4.3 million tourists visit Jamaica every year. Some other major exports of Jamaica are aluminum oxide, which makes up 52% of their export totals, refined petroleum, aluminum ore, hard liquor, processed fruits and vegetables, coffee, beer, sauces and seasonings, as well as baked goods. Emigration has greatly affected the population growth within Jamaica, with the main destinations being the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. In 2004, it was estimated that 2.5 million Jamaicans and those of Jamaican descent lived abroad. The population density of Jamaica is average compared to other countries located in the West Indies.
