Vermont’s town boundaries reflect a history of contested land claims. In the eighteenth century, New Hampshire and New York issued competing grants in a region long inhabited by Abenaki peoples. Disputes over ownership helped drive the movement for a separate government: Vermont declared independence in 1777 and entered the Union in 1791. Chartered towns became enduring units of local government, giving later maps a framework for recording settlement and land use.

Nineteenth-century Vermont mapmakers worked within that town-based landscape. County maps and atlases commonly organized information by township, while more detailed plans could identify village streets, mills, schools, and property owners. The collection includes maps of places such as Burlington, Middlebury, and Montpelier, alongside county maps. These different geographic scales offer distinct perspectives: a county map can explain relationships among neighboring towns, while a city map can make the organization of a single community easier to follow.

The New England state of New Hampshire took statehood in 1788 (it was the 9th state admitted to Union—one of the original 13 states). Our historic map archives include a wide selection of old New Hampshire maps featuring every county in the state, including Belknap, Carroll, Cheshire, Coos, Grafton, Hillsborough, Merrimack, Rockingham, Strafford, and Sullivan. We also have many city maps, including ones for Bristol, Brookfield, Center Harbor, Chatham, Colebrook, Columbia, Durham, Effingham, Farmington, Gilford, Gorham, Hanover, Lakeport, Lancaster, Littleton, Milan, Millsfield, Moultonboro, New Castle, New Hampshire, and Stark. Europeans first arrived in what is now known as New Hampshire in the early 17th century. The first settlement was a fishing outpost established in 1623, three years after the Pilgrims on the Mayflower arrived at Plymouth Rock. Before that time, the region was inhabited by Native Americans, specifically the Abenaki and the Western Pennacook tribes. Colonists would continue to arrive over the next several decades. Eventually, the Native American tribes were pushed out of the area by the time New Hampshire became a state in 1788. Concord was made the state's capital in 1808. During the Civil War, around 35,000 New Hampshire men joined the Union military. At the time, that was about 11% of the state's population. There were no Civil War battles fought in New Hampshire. Turning to industrialization, textile mills reigned supreme in New Hampshire in the 1800s and early 1900s. The largest textile mill, Amoskeag Manufacturing Company, was founded in Manchester, New Hampshire, and at one time employed half of the city's residents. The mill boasted 25,000 looms that could produce more than 50 miles of cloth each hour, making it the largest cotton textile plant in the world. Amoskeag Manufacturing, which first opened in 1810, ceased operations in 1935. New Hampshire's textile mill days are a thing of the past, and today the state's economy is much more diversified. They include a mix of agriculture, manufacturing, health care, real estate, retail, wholesale, government, tourism, and finance. Finally, New Hampshire's Mount Washington, at 6,288 feet, is known for its extreme weather conditions. It's said to have the worst weather on earth, rivaling places like Antarctica and Mount Everest. The 'Venturi effect' is what causes the extreme weather conditions on Mount Washington. Its peak is much higher than the surroundings. It results in all of the weather being pushed up and over the summit. Additionally, as air goes over the summit, it gets squeezed between a stable layer of air and the mountain, causing winds to accelerate. Due to this effect, Mount Washington holds the highest wind speed record of 231 miles per hour, recorded in 1934. In January of 2004, the wind chill dropped to -102.59 on the mountain.

New York is the fourth most populous state in the United States, and its largest city is, of course, New York City, which draws tourists from around the world. Albany is the state capital. In New York City, the neon lights of Times Square, the lush beauty of Central Park (New York’s backyard), and the iconic Statue of Liberty National Monument are just a few of its attractions. Visitors also get a kick out of walking along Wall Street in the city’s Financial District, taking in a Broadway show, and seeing what it’s like to stand in the center of Grand Central Terminal. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Rockefeller Center, and the Empire State Building are also quite popular, among the many other attractions. New York City is also home to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, which serves as a remembrance for the lives lost in the September 11, 2001 attacks. Adjacent to the museum is One World Trade Center, the main building that was rebuilt following the attacks. It is the tallest skyscraper in the Western Hemisphere. The building stands 1,776 feet tall, a number that represents the year America gained its independence. Outside the cityscape of New York City, you’ll find beautiful scenery that includes lakes, rivers, mountains, and forests. Niagara Falls, visited by around 8 million tourists every year, is one of the state’s crown jewels. With over 3,000 tons of water flowing every second, visitors are treated to a breathtaking experience. The state’s economy is driven by finance, insurance, health care, real estate, and high technology. Mass media, journalism, and publishing are also high on the list. In agriculture, you might be surprised to learn that New York is the largest producer of cabbage in the United States. Maple syrup, apples, cherries, dairy products, onions, and potatoes are also produced in the state. And New York is also the second-largest wine producer by volume behind California. Finally, the iconic ‘I ♥ NY’ slogan and logo began as an advertising campaign in 1977. Noted graphic designer Milton Glaser came up with the idea while riding in the back of a taxi cab. Glaser had a long, successful career creating iconic posters, logos, and artwork and passed away in 2020 at age 91.

And Salem, Massachusetts, is where the mass hysteria of the Salem witch trials took place in 1692 and 1693. Four U.S. presidents were born in the state of Massachusetts. They are John Adams (second president), John Quincy Adams (sixth president), John F. Kennedy (35th president), and George H.W. Bush (41st president). The prestigious Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) plays a key role. Biotechnology, engineering, services, and maritime trade are also top sectors in the state’s economy. Geographically, most of the state’s population resides in the Greater Boston region along the coastal plain of the Atlantic Ocean. That’s where the Cape Cod peninsula, full of quaint seaside villages and beaches, is found. Heading west, central Massachusetts is hilly and rural, and beyond that, you’ll find the Connecticut River Valley. The Berkshires is located in the western part of the state and is a well-known outdoor and travel destination. Finally, did you know that Massachusetts is where the game of basketball was invented? In 1891, an instructor teaching physical education at a school that would later become known as Springfield College came up with the idea. He used two peach baskets, nailed to balcony rails, as goals. The new game was a hit, and as word spread, rules were asked to be drawn, and the rest is history.
