Saint Petersburg developed around water as much as streets. Founded by Peter the Great in 1703 during Russia’s war with Sweden, the city became an imperial capital and a gateway to the Baltic. Its position in the Neva delta shaped both ambitions and constraints: islands, branching waterways, and flood-prone ground influenced where people built, how goods moved, and how districts connected.

Mapping this landscape required attention to riverbanks, canals, embankments, and crossings alongside palaces and public squares. Plans of the imperial city often emphasized its formal geometry, including the avenues radiating from the Admiralty and the street grid on Vasilyevsky Island. Nautical charts served a different purpose, recording channels, depths, and approaches through the Gulf of Finland. These mapping traditions reflect the city’s overlapping roles as a seat of government, port, and naval center.

Place names provide another way to read its history. Saint Petersburg became Petrograd in 1914 and Leningrad in 1924; its earlier name was restored in 1991. A map’s title can therefore offer a chronological clue, though later reproductions may preserve older wording. Comparing street names and crossings can reveal political change alongside physical continuity, especially where familiar avenues still follow routes established around the Neva’s waterways.

Russia is a transcontinental country spanning Eastern Europe as well as Northern Asia. Russia is by far the largest country in the world, spanning an area over 17,098,246 square kilometers, or 6,601,670 square miles. This means that Russia makes up 1/8th of all of the Earth’s habitable land. By landmass, Russia is larger than three continents. The country borders 16 other countries, which is the largest amount in the world. Russia is the ninth most populated country in the world, and the most populated in Europe with a total of 145,478,097 inhabitants. The country’s capital, and largest city, is Moscow, which is also the largest city in all of Europe. Russia is home to nine major mountain ranges, and they are all found in the southern parts of the country. The highest peak within the country is Mount Elbrus, located in the Caucasus Mountains. Mount Elbrus stands at an altitude of 5,642 meters, or 18,510 feet. This is also the highest peak in all of Europe. There are a great number of islands and archipelagos belonging to Russia due to the fact that the large country borders three different oceans. Russia is also home to over 100,000 rivers. Due to its extremely large size, Russia is home to several different ecosystems and habitats, including polar deserts, tundra, taiga, forest steppe, and subtropics. Russia is home to the world’s largest forest reserve as half of the entire country is forested. This accounts for the largest amounts of carbon dioxide in the world. There are over 12,500 vascular plant species, 7,000-9,000 species of algae, and over 20,000 species of fungi. More than 10% of Russia’s total land area accounts for protected natural territories, including 45 biosphere reserves, 64 national parks, and 101 nature reserves. The economy of Russia is mixed, with an abundance of natural resources such as oil and natural gasses. The country is home to a labor force of around 70 million, which makes it the world’s sixth largest. Russia is the world’s thirteenth largest exporter, and the 21st largest importer. Oil and gas accounted for 60% of all exports in 2019, and also accounted for 45% of Russia’s federal budget in January 2022. The country has one of the lowest amounts of external debt in the world, however it has relatively high inequality of wealth and household income for a developed country. Russia is home to a very sparse population, with a vast majority of the population inhabited in the western part of the country. The country has a very low population density of nine people per square kilometer, or 23 per square mile. Since the 1990s, Russia’s death rate has exceeded the birth rate. The Total Fertility Rate is estimated to be 1.5 children per woman, which is one of the lowest in the world. Along with this, Russia is home to a relatively older population, with the median age being 40.3 years old.
