The Netherlands, also known as Holland, is a country that is located in Northwestern Europe. The country is made up of twelve provinces, and is bordered by Germany and Belgium. The country also owns oversea territories in the Caribbean. The total area of the country is 41,865 square kilometers, or 16,164 square miles. The population is 17,718,000 inhabitants, which is estimated to be the 67th most populated country in the world. Amsterdam is the largest city in the country, and also serves as the capital. The government is both a constitutional monarchy and a parliamentary democracy. The current King is Willem-Alexander, and the current Prime Minister is Mark Rutte.
When it comes to the geographical makeup of the country, the Netherlands is a relatively flat country. Only around 50% of its land exceeds one meter above sea level. 26% of its land area is located below sea level. The highest point within the Netherlands is The Vaalserberg, a hill that stands at an altitude of 322.4 meters, or 1,058 feet. The climate of the Netherlands is known to be temperate, with common rainfall, gentle winters, and cooler summers. The country is also known to be relatively cloudy, and on an average day, three-fifths of the sky is cloudy. Some common animal species one may find in the Netherlands include roe deer, red deer, foxes, badgers, boars, bevers, mouflons, and muskrats. The waters of the country are populated by numerous freshwater animals, however many types of river fish and river lobster have become endangered due to water pollution. The country is home to 20 different national parks, which all are able to preserve the nature that they protect. The Netherlands is also home to several nature reserves, and also protects endangered species by law.
The Netherlands is home to an advanced economy that has always played a key role in the European economy. Some of the most important sectors of the economy are shipping, fishing, agriculture, trade, and banking. The country is also home to great economic freedom. The Netherlands is also one of the world's top 10 exporting countries. Some of the key exports from the Netherlands are refined petroleum, broadcasting equipment, packaged medicaments, cars, computers, photo lab equipment, and medical instruments. One third of the world's exports of chillies, tomatoes, and cucumbers go through the Netherlands. The country also exports one-fifteenth of the world's apples.
The Netherlands is a perfect example of a developed country. The country ranks highly in press freedom, economic freedom, human development, quality of life, as well as happiness. The death penalty punishment was abolished in the country in the year 1870, and the country was also the first country in the world to legalize gay marriage in the year 2001. The Netherlands is the most densely populated country within Europe, and the 16th most densely populated country in the world, with 424 people per square kilometer, or 1,100 people per square mile. The Dutch people are also, based on nationality, the tallest in the world, with an average height of 1.81 meters for men (5 ft 11.3 in), and 1.67 meters for women (5 ft 5.7 in).
