Key West Maps

Shallow reefs, a curving harbor, and clustered wharves shaped Key West’s life, and vintage maps record that maritime geometry as clearly as the island’s streets. Comparing nautical charts with town plans shows how shipping, salvage, and later rail and road links reshaped neighborhoods and the waterfront, revealing how mapmakers chose to portray the island’s changing edges.

Key West grew around its harbor and the shipping routes through the Florida Straits. In the nineteenth century, salvaging cargo from vessels wrecked on nearby reefs supported a substantial local industry, alongside fishing, maritime trade, and naval activity. Cigar manufacturing later expanded the city’s economy and drew workers from Cuba. These connections help explain why the island’s waterfront, working neighborhoods, and links across the water are central to understanding its development.

Historical mapping of Key West served different needs on land and at sea. Nautical charts emphasized water depths, reefs, channels, and anchorages, information essential to approaching a low-lying island surrounded by navigational hazards. Town plans and fire insurance maps could instead record streets, wharves, building footprints, and industrial uses. Reading these map types together can reveal how the harbor’s geography shaped activity ashore, while reminding readers that each mapmaker selected details for a particular purpose.

Transportation offers another useful point of comparison. The Overseas Railroad reached Key West in 1912; after the 1935 hurricane severed the route farther up the Keys, the Overseas Highway opened in 1938. Comparing maps from different periods can help readers trace the changing approaches to the island, distinguish rail connections from road links, and see how a city long oriented toward the sea became connected to mainland automobile travel.

How to Choose the Right Map

Start with the place or subject that matters, then choose the artwork, format, and size that best fit your space and story.

Choose a hometown, favorite destination, family location, military base, park, lake, railroad, or other place that carries a personal connection.

Try searching by a city, county, state, landmark, year, or specific place name.

Look closely at the map year, geographic coverage, orientation, labels, landmarks, and overall visual style. Different maps of the same place can tell very different stories.

Use the product images and zoom tools to inspect streets, names, boundaries, and historic features.

Select an unframed print for flexibility, a ready-to-hang solid wood frame for a finished presentation, or a wrapped canvas for a clean gallery-style appearance.

Framed prints include protective plexiglass and arrive ready to hang.

Consider the wall, furniture, viewing distance, and amount of visual impact you want. Larger maps make striking focal points, while smaller sizes work well in offices, studies, entryways, and grouped displays.

Measure the available wall area before choosing your final print size.
