Ethiopia is a landlocked country located within Africa, more specifically, the Horn of Africa. The country has a total land area of 1,100,000 square kilometers, or 420,000 square miles. With a total population of 123.5 million inhabitants, which makes Ethiopia the 12th most populated country in the world, and the 2nd most populated country in Africa after Nigeria. The capital, and largest city in Ethiopia is Addis Ababa. This city is home to the headquarters of the African Union. The current president of Ethiopia is Sahle-Work Zewde, while the current prime minister is Abiy Ahmed.
When it comes to the total size of the country, Ethiopia is the 28th largest country in the world based on size, and is comparable with Bolivia. A great portion of the country lies within the Horn of Africa, which is the easternmost part of the continent of Africa. There are plenty of geographical contrasts that make up the country, such as fertile plains, to forests and rivers. Ethiopia is home to the worldβs hottest settlement of Dallol, which is described as a ghost town. Ras Dashen is the highest mountain within Ethiopia, with an elevation of 4,550 meters, or around 15,157 feet. Ethiopia is home to a diverse population of birds, with 856 bird species, with 20 of them endemic and 16 of them endangered or critically endangered. There are several endangered or threatened species that reside within Ethiopia. Some mammals that one can expect to see within the country include lions, leopards, elephants, giraffes, rhinoceroses, as well as wild buffalo. Smaller animals include foxes, jackals, wild dogs, and hyenas.
