Chile is a country located within South America that occupies a long and narrow stretch of land. In fact, Chile’s width averages around 110 miles wide. The total area of the country is around 756,096 square kilometers (or 291,930 square miles), and the country holds a population of around 17.5 million. Chile is bordered by Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. Although a developing country, Chile is a high income economy and is home to one of the most stable economies in Latin America.
Because of its long length and short width, there exists a vast majority of landscapes and climates within Chile. In fact, the driest desert in the world calls Chile its home – the Atacama Desert. In contrast to the harsh conditions of a desert, Chile is also home to mediterranean climate, as well as oceanic climates, complete with alpine tundras and glaciers. Chile is a country located near numerous volcanic zones, leading to very mountainous landscapes. In fact, Chile is home to the largest volcano on Earth. It is called Ojos de Salado, and stands at an elevation of around 22,615 feet. Currently, the volcano sits dormant.Keeping the idea of unique landscapes and climates in mind, many of the plants and animals that can be found in Chile are endemic. The Atacama Desert of the north and the Andes mountain range the the east serve as barriers that lead to the isolation of certain plants and animals. Because of these barriers, Chile can be split into three: The desert conditions located in the north, the Mediterranean climate found in central Chile, and the humid areas of the south. Some of the animals that can be commonly found within Chile are pumas, cougars, guanacos, chillas, as well as several species of marsupials and the pudu.
The three largest cities within Chile are Santiago, Greater Valparaíso, and Greater Concepción. The capital of Chile is Santiago, and around 40% of the entire country’s population lives there. With a total population of around 17.5 million, Chile has experienced a slow growth rate due to the total birth rate facing a decline. It is estimated that by 2050, Chile will reach a population of 20.2 million people. Did you know that Chile has one of the lowest homicide rates in the world, following Canada?
With the republic of Chile established in 1821, Chile has had a long history of a representative democracy. Throughout the years, Chile has been known as a country of great political freedom. The constitution for Chile was written in 1981 by Jaime Guzmán, and was the document stating that power belonged to the president as well as the people. Currently, the length of a presidential term is four years, having been reduced from six years. The current president of Chile is Gabriel Boric, having served his spot since March 11th, 2022.
Chile is home to the highest degree of economic freedom within South America, making it 7th overall worldwide. Chile owes a lot of its great economic success to copper, as half of all of Chile’s exports are made up of copper ore or refined copper. This makes the country the world’s largest exporter of copper!
