Cape Verde, also known as Cabo Verde, is an island country and an archipelago located in the central Atlantic ocean. It is made up of ten volcanic islands that create a total combined land area of 4,033 square kilometers, or 1,557 square miles. The country is a part of the African Union, and is one of the most developed countries within the union. The total population of Cape Verde is 483,628 inhabitants. The countryβs government is a semi-presidential representative democratic republic, and the current president is JosΓ© Maria Neves.
The island country is located 570 kilometers, or 350 miles, off of the coast of the African continent. The ten volcanic islands are laid out in a horseshoe shape, and nine of which are inhabited. Three of the islands, Sal, Boa Vista, and Maio, are geographically flat, sandy and dry; the others are rockier and home to more vegetation. The largest active volcano within the region is Pico de Fogo, which last erupted in 2014. The volcano is also the highest point within the country. In 2011, Cape Verde was ranked the eighth most endangered nation to be susceptible to flooding caused by climate change. Within the country, there are over 100 species of birds, in which several are endemic. Some of these species include Alexanderβs swift, Bourneβs heron, Raso lark, Cape Verde warbler, as well as the lago sparrow. Some of the mammals that can be found on the island include feral goats, monkeys, as well as the countryβs only native animal, the long-eared bat. The rodent population of Cape Verde is believed to have originated from rodents sneaking onto traveling ships. There exists several species of skinks, geckos, as well as lizards. There are also several species of butterfly that reside on the islands.
The exports of Cape Verde are dominated by fish, such as processed fish, non-fillet frozen fish, and molluscs. This is because of the countryβs location β fish are a natural resource to the country. Other exports include non-knit menβs suits, scrap iron, fishing and hunting equipment, footwear parts, and aircraft parts. The main minerals found within Cape Verde are salt, pozzolana, and limestone. Around 90% of all food within Cape Verde is imported. The economic growth and development that Cape Verde has experienced, despite having a lack of natural resources, has caused the country to garner attention and has had other countries helping with development aid.
The 2013 census reported that Cape Verde was home to a population of 512,096 inhabitants, with 236,000 living on the main island, Santiago. Over 65% of the population resides within urban areas, and the total literacy rate is 89%. Many citizens from Cape Verde have emigrated, causing a large diaspora within the United States and also Portugal. The official language of the country is Portuguese, which is used by government officials, as well as used in media like radios, television shows, and newspapers. The official language is Cape verdean Creole, which is the language used by a majority of the population.
