Brussels Belgium Maps

The roughly pentagonal shape of central Brussels follows the course of former defensive walls, giving old maps a useful point of reference. Comparing earlier plans with today’s streets can reveal how boulevards replaced fortifications while preserving an outline that still helps make the city recognizable.

Brussels grew along the Senne River, but much of that waterway disappeared beneath the city center during nineteenth-century modernization. Covering the river addressed severe sanitation problems and made room for broad new boulevards through densely built neighborhoods. This transformation helps explain why an older plan of Brussels can describe a very different city from the streets familiar today: a river once central to commerce and daily life became largely invisible above ground.

The former fortifications left another lasting imprint. As Brussels expanded, its outer defensive walls were dismantled and replaced by boulevards, preserving the roughly pentagonal outline still associated with the historic center. Maps made for different purposes recorded these changes differently. Detailed street plans could distinguish narrow lanes, squares, and individual blocks, while broader plans placed the old center within an expanding network of suburbs, canals, and railways.

Comparing maps across periods can help separate the medieval street pattern from later interventions. Look for routes that follow the former walls, streets interrupted by new thoroughfares, and the changing visibility of the Senne. French and Dutch place names offer another useful comparison, though a change in the language printed on a map does not necessarily mean the place itself was renamed.

How to Choose the Right Map

Start with the place or subject that matters, then choose the artwork, format, and size that best fit your space and story.

Choose a hometown, favorite destination, family location, military base, park, lake, railroad, or other place that carries a personal connection.

Try searching by a city, county, state, landmark, year, or specific place name.

Look closely at the map year, geographic coverage, orientation, labels, landmarks, and overall visual style. Different maps of the same place can tell very different stories.

Use the product images and zoom tools to inspect streets, names, boundaries, and historic features.

Select an unframed print for flexibility, a ready-to-hang solid wood frame for a finished presentation, or a wrapped canvas for a clean gallery-style appearance.

Framed prints include protective plexiglass and arrive ready to hang.

Consider the wall, furniture, viewing distance, and amount of visual impact you want. Larger maps make striking focal points, while smaller sizes work well in offices, studies, entryways, and grouped displays.

Measure the available wall area before choosing your final print size.
