Slovakia is a landlocked country located in Central Europe, bordered by Poland, Ukraine, Hungary, Austria, and the Czech Republic. The entire land area of Slovakia is 49,000 square kilometers, or 19,000 square miles, which makes the country the 127th largest in the world by land area. Slovakia’s total population is 5.4 million inhabitants. The capital, and largest city, is Bratislava, while the second largest city is Košice. The landscape of Slovakia is known to be mountainous, with the large range of Carpathian Mountains extending across the northern part of the country. The highest point found in the country is Gerlachovsky štít, which stands at an elevation of 8,709 feet, or 2,654 meters. The largest lowlands within the country are the Danubian Lowland as well as the Eastern Slovak Lowland. Forests cover around 41% of the land’s surface. Caves are commonly found below the mountains of Slovakia, with 30 of these caves open to the public. Rivers also arise within mountains, with the longest river in the country measuring at 403 kilometers, or 250 miles.
