Pakistan is a country located within South Asia, and is the world’s fifth most populated country, holding a population of almost 242 million. The country is the 33rd largest in the world by area, spanning 881,913 square kilometers, or 340,509 square miles. Pakistan borders Afghanistan, China, India, and Iran. The country serves as a site for several ancient cultures, such as the Neolithic site of Mehrgarh. The government serves as a democratic parliamentary federal republic, and Islam is the offical religion. The current president of Pakistan is Arif Alvi.

The environment and geography of Pakistan is very diverse. The country is divided into three different geographical zones, which are the northern highlands, the Indus River plain, and the Balochistan Plateau. The northern highlands contain numerous mountain ranges, which contain some of the world’s highest peaks and also five of the fourteen mountain peaks in the world over 8,000 meters tall. The highest peak in Pakistan is K2, which is also the second largest peak in the world after Mt. Everest. The mountain stands at an elevation of 8,611 meters, or 28,251 feet above sea level.
