Jordan is a country located within West Asia, and is situated in the crossroads of Asia, Africa, and Europe. Jordan is bordered by Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, and Israel. The capital and largest city within Jordan is Amman, which also serves as the country’s economic, political and cultural center. The country spans an area of 89,342 square kilometers (or 34,495 square miles), and holds a population of around 10 million, making Jordan the eleventh most populated Arab country. The government of Jordan serves as a unitary state under a constitutional monarchy. The current monarch of the country is Abdullah II, and the current prime minister is Bisher Khasawneh.
The climate within Jordan varies greatly. The further inland from the Mediterranean means that there are greater contrasts in temperature as well as rainfall amounts. The highlands over the Jordan Valley, mountains of the Dead Sea and Wadi Araba experience a heavy Mediterranean climate, while eastern parts of the country experience an arid desert. Summers in Jordan experience an average temperature of around 32°C (or 90°F) to sometimes 40°C (104°F), while winters have temperatures averaging around 11.08°C (52°F). Winter brings rainfall and also occasional snowfall to certain parts of the country.
