There are fourteen total volcanoes in Italy, with only four being active to this day. The active volcanoes are as follows: Mount Etna in Sicily (which is also the largest active volcano in Europe), Vulcano, Stromboli, and Vesuvius. The highest point associated with Italy is Mont Blanc, standing at an altitude of 4,807 meters, or 15,777 feet. Although the peak is located within France, Mont Blanc is owned by both France and Italy, ultimately making it the highest point of Italy.

Italy is home to one of the largest animal biodiversity, with a recorded 57,000 species, which makes up one third of all European animals. The varied landscapes within Italy can be accounted for by the vast population of different plants and animals. There are 4,777 endemic species found within Italy, such as the Sardinian long-eared bat, Sardinian red deer, spectacled salamander, brown cave salamander, Italian newt, and Italian frog. Within Italy there are a total of 119 mammal species, 550 bird species, 69 reptile species, 39 amphibian species, 623 fish species, and 56,213 invertebrate species, 37,303 of these being insects.

Italy is home to a major advanced economy, and is the eighth largest economy in the world. The country is best known for its competitive agricultural sector, as well as the large manufacturing and industry sector. Some of the major exports of Italy include cars, vehicle parts, packaged medicaments, refined petroleum, wine, and valves. Italy is the world’s largest wine exporter, with its most famous wines being Tuscan Chianti and Piedmontese Barolo. Italy is also amongst the top producers of olive oils, several fruits such as apples and olives, as well as vegetables like artichokes and tomatoes.

With a median age of 46.5 years old, Italy is home to the fifth oldest population in the world. In fact, one in five Italians is over the age of 65. The current fertility rate is 1.41 children per woman, however that is still considerably below the replacement rate of 2.1. It is estimated that by 2030, the fertility rate will grow to 1.6-1.8.
