The Dominican Republic is a country located in the Caribbean region. It occupies the eastern five-eighths of its land, while Haiti occupies the other side. Based on area, the Dominican Republic is the second largest nation located in the Antilles, taking up 48,671 square kilometers (18,792 square miles). The Dominican Republic is also the third largest nation in the Antilles by population, holding 10.8 million inhabitants. 3.3 million of these people live in Santo Domingo, which serves as the capital for the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic is the most visited country in the Carribeans, which is because of its year-round golf courses, as well as the diverse geographic destinations.

There are four major mountain ranges located within the Dominican Republic, and they are as follows: the Cordillera Septentrional (Northern mountain range), the Cordillera Central (Central mountain range), Sierra de Neiba, and the Sierra de Bahoruco. Of these mountain ranges, the largest and most rugged is the Cordillera Central. The Cordillera Central is also home to the highest point within the country, called Pico Duarte, standing at an elevation of about 3,098 meters (or 10,164 feet). Between the Northern and Central mountain ranges lies the Cibao valley, which is where a great majority of farming areas within the country are located.

When it comes to wildlife, there exists a vast collection of both plants and animals within the country. The mountains in the country are covered with pine and tropical trees, however a large majority of these trees have been cut to use as commercial lumber. Royal palm trees are also found all over the area. Cattle and goats are very common animals to find around the area, due to their introduction from early Spanish colonists. Alligators, different species of fish, and shellfish are all very common to find around water areas, whether it be rivers or oceans. Coral reefs are also likely to be spotted.

The Dominican Republic has a primarily young population. In 2010, it was estimated that around 31.2% of the population was under 15 years old, with 6% of the population being over 65 years old. These two factors are very commonly found in developing countries. Some large cities within the Dominican Republic, not counting the capital, are Santiago de los Caballeros (pop. of 745,293), La Romana (pop. of 214,109), and San Pedro de Macorís (pop. of 185,225).

Currently, the Dominican Republic is home to a mixed economy, based mostly off of services, trade, manufacturing, telecommunications, and construction. Along with these, agriculture still plays a large role in society. The Dominican Republic has the largest economy in the Caribbean, and has the seventh-largest economy within Latin America. In fact, over the last 25 years, the Dominican Republic has been home to the fastest growing economy in the Western Hemisphere, experiencing a GDP growth rate of around 5.3% from the years 1992 to 2018. Some of the country’s largest exports are gold, medical instruments, bananas, rolled tobacco, low-voltage protective equipment, and knit t-shirts.
